I think going into the day with a plan aways helps you be more effective as a coach.Knowing how you want to warm someone up for the workout, know how you want to scale ahead of time, so whether or not you know who's going to be in class or what their limitations, injuries or skill levels are just have a game plan and know what you can scale or what you can substitute for those movements.And it keeps class moving a little bit more smoothly.So i know people aren't going to be able to do strict handstand pushups, head touching the floor.
In a class of 22 people, we had three who were able to do that, full range of motion and get their head all the way to the ground.So i came in knowing three or four different scaling options that i could do for those people right off the bat.Just watch me for a second, but we're going to practice this on ground about how to initiate into a proper handstand.You'll start with your hands out in front of you in this pike position here.You'll have your hips in the air, your hands just out in front of you,.
Think about as wide as where you would do a shoulder press from, with your hands on that barbell.From here what you're going to do in this position is you're going to break forward with your shoulders.You see how your shoulders go forward.And once that happens, you're gonna touch the top of your head to the ground.And then push yourself back up into that top position.So shoulders break, head touches, push up, back to that solid top position.Most important part is that the shoulders break forward first.
Not just down to the ground, that's when we knock our face on the floor, so don't do that.And then try and touch your head forward toward my hand right here.Good job.Then press right back up.Freeze.Right now, you feel you're in a pushup position go back to down dog.Good.And then when you press up, try and press into a down dog position.Like.This.Yeah, that's the top.And now from here, break at the shoulder, and then touch the top of your head to the ground,.
And now we're right back down into down dog.That's it.Much better.And then up.One more time.Press through here.Remember, that's the top.Now down, touch your head.As you press up, press towards the box.That's exactly it.Come on up.Bring those knees towards your chest.Up.Good.Now when you're kicking your feet, rather than kicking up, think about kicking this way.Make it a half circle, a half circle to the wall.So, james has been working for a while on his kipping handstand pushups,.
And when he kipswhen he was trying to kip originally, he would just kick his feet straight up into the air, which was trying to, rather than turning his hip up and over it was just pushing him farther into the ground.By pushing his legs up, it was turning his hip the wrong direction.So he was forcing himself down instead of up.So when i told him if the wall's here to kick up and away from the wall instead of just up into the air it allows him to turn his hip up and over.
A little bit more efficiently.He could actually get some assistance out of the bottom instead of making it harder.James when you cued me to come down in a half squat and then come back around, they are exponentially easier.If i would have felt that right in the beginning and not done 25 the hard way, i think i would have been able to get through the whole thing.Rory let me put it this way, when you do a kipping pullup, you know how your hip has to go up and over before it goes over.
Same thing with the kipping handstand pushup.If you just kick down during hte kipping pullup, all your energy goes down.Well, that's what you're doing there.If you just kick straight instead of turning your hip up and over, you just smash your head farther into the ground.Coaching is knowing what people need and it's knowing how to give it to them.Not just having the knowledge, but also being able to portray that knowledge to people and giving them what they need in the dose that they need it.
Instead of just throwing all of the cues and skills that i have as a coach at them at one time, i know those things, i've done the studying ahead of time, i've done my game plan and i've organized efficiently, so that when it comes into this arena you get a chance to give people exactly what they're looking for.Instead of knees out, find your heels, chest up, lower, i can say, hey, push your knees out, wait a couple of reps, then say, hey good job pushing your knees out.
